The Cranky Shopkeeper
Ecommerce has grown to be a massive part of online traffic. Although a lot of that is directed towards the main hubs (Amazon, Ebay, The Cheese Society) many larger, or even more discerning outlets opt to skip the fees and do business on their own terms.
Of the sales platforms available, Magento is probably the most flexible as well as best established. It released way back in 2008 and I've been using it, for my sins, since 2010.
Because it's not without its quirks and idiosyncracies - not for nothing that the "flush cache" button is given such prominance - but with honesty there's nothing else that does quite what it does. I know of several sizeable agencies that essentially do business building for Magento and that's it.
If you're looking for a large support pool - and that's a good idea when your trade hinges on it - that's a considerable boon. Factor in the extremely healty ecosystem of themes and expansions, ability to list almost any product configuration, and regular updates and Magento's the Amazon of Not Amazon.
I've been using Magento since Nov 2008 (17 years).
